Decisions are everything. … Every…thing…….

The thumbnail for this post says it all. Decisions are very important and A.I. is reminding us of that when it makes the decision to leave off a leg, or decides to hold the bow backwards. How about the head popping through the cello or worse yet bottom left decides to leave off a string!!! The A.I. brain is going through the world wide web and deciding what a cellist should look like and and kind of grabbing in the dark, its a student, it is learning. We are much the same way actually. We are making decisions and seeing if those decisions are bearing fruit or not. But what if we don’t make any decisions and give a definite output? What if the A.I. machine went through the entire world of pictures and then said to me, “Yeah, I don’t know…whatever…” That is in effect what we do when we just play through stuff and don’t make any definitive decisions about what we are doing. The A.I. learns by making decisions, then showing what it decided then learning from what we tell it afterwards. You have to do the same thing in the practice room. You have to decide something, lots of things actually. You have to decide what it should sound like, you have to decide what you believe about the piece and the composers intentions (<= this one is WAY more important than you might think) you have to decide what it should feel like physically while you are playing. Can you decide wrong? Of course you can, you might leave off a string or a finger every once and a while like our A.I. friend here but if you never decide anything you never learn anything, you never come to any core musical beliefs. Happy deciding and practicing. Stay safe out there.
